Hiding God’s Word – Regarding Dependability

Written by R.L. Wilson | May 1, 2025 9:37:49 AM

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

I have a friend who is a professional volunteer. If there’s a job to be done, she is one of the first to say she’ll do it. But she seldom follows through. When it’s time for her to buckle down and do the work, she’s nowhere to be found. Nor does she offer excuses. In fact, she seems to always have “forgotten” that she had offered to do the job. In a word, she is not dependable.

How different is our God! Max Lucado explains it this way: “From the first chapter of Scripture, the Bible makes a case for the dependability of God.  Without exception when God spoke, something wonderful happened.  By divine fiat there was light, land, beaches, and creatures.  God consulted no advisers.  He needed no assistance.  “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm” (Psalm 33:9)…. ‘It is impossible for God to lie’ (Hebrews 6:18). God will keep his promises! It must happen because of who God is! And because God’s promises are unbreakable our hope is unshakable![1]

The Bible has much to say about the dependability [reliability, trustworthiness, loyalty, faithfulness] God wants to see in His children. From the verses below, chose a few to memorize so that you will always have God’s Word to remind you to be dependable, the “good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23).

Exodus 19:5 – Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Luke 6:46 – Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord,” and do not do what I say?

Luke 16:10 – Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

James 1:4 – Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

1 Corinthians 15:58 – Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

1 John 2:5-6 – But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
