Spotting the Occult in Everyday Places: Understanding Why It Matters

Would you know an occult symbol if you saw one? If you were out shopping, would you notice a talisman in the jewelry section? If you were having coffee with a new friend, would you recognize an esoteric tattoo?

Before we can understand why noticing these things even matters, we need to understand the reality these symbols come from.

The Bible teaches that the world is not just physical—it is spiritual.

God alone is the Most High, the Creator of all things. But Scripture also describes other spiritual beings such as angels, demons, and unseen rulers. These are created beings, not equal to God, but real and active within God’s created order (Colossians 1:16; Ephesians 6:12).

Throughout the Old Testament, we see a pattern: the nations turn away from the one true God and give worship to what is not God. What began as rebellion for some became religion for many. The Bible speaks of the “gods of the nations” and shows that idolatrous worship can involve real spiritual beings who wrongly receive worship (1 Corinthians 10:20).

This matters because it reshapes how we think about some symbols, originally designed, either knowingly or unknowingly, with the worship of these other gods in mind.

Symbols are not just drawings—they come from somewhere. Historically, some were used to represent, invoke, or align with spiritual realities. Idolatry is not about the object itself, but about giving worship and trust to something other than God.

That’s why symbols can carry spiritual meaning, even when used casually. We’ve created a guide to show you some of the most common symbols that are circulating in our culture today. The same image can function very differently depending on how and why it is used—but that does not make it neutral.
The Bible consistently warns against seeking power, protection, or guidance from any source other than God. Not because those practices are powerless, but because they involve real spiritual experiences that lead away from God.

They point to real spiritual beings that compete for trust, allegiance, and worship.

Jesus Christ is not one spiritual option among many. He is the one who has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18). He has already overcome every spiritual power (Colossians 2:15), and in Him we find what so many symbols promise but cannot give—abundant life (John 10:10).

That is why this matters.

Because behind every symbol is a story.

Behind every story is a worldview.

And behind every worldview is a question:

Who are you trusting?
