The increasing violence of ISIS, especially toward Christians in the Middle East, has led to many questions regarding their role in the future. Is ISIS in Bible prophecy? While ISIS is not mentioned by name in the Bible, this evil group clearly resembles some aspects found in Scripture.
First, ISIS clearly opposes Christians, something the Bible declares will take place in the end times: “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days” (2 Timothy 3:1).
Second, ISIS opposes Israel, something predicted in Scripture. Ezekiel 38 specifically mentions a future war by the nations surrounding Israel. They will unite to attack it. Many of these ancient kingdoms are in locations where ISIS operates today. Interestingly, four areas mentioned in Ezekiel 38 likely refer to locations in modern-day Turkey, while the main uniting group is located in part of what is now Russia.
Third, ISIS seeks a global caliphate or one-world government, something predicted in the Bible. In the last days, Scripture speaks of an Antichrist who will unite nations in opposition to God’s people (Revelation 13). Though the nations in this global force are not specifically noted, the idea of nations seeking a united caliphate in opposition to Israel closely resembles the prophecies found in Daniel and Revelation.
How to Help How should believers live in light of this information?
First, believers can stand opposed to evil. We are to be salt and light (Matthew 5:20) and do good to those in need (1 John 3:16-18). We need not be silent but encourage a strong and clear response to ISIS members who kill and torture anyone who opposes them.
Second, believers can pray for and support those hurt by ISIS. This includes both fellow Christians and others persecuted by ISIS in the Middle East. In addition, supporting Israel, whether popular or not in our culture, must remain a priority. Third, we can help with organizations that assist those under attack by ISIS, such as ministries that help refugees fleeing from war.
