Hiding God’s Word – About Wisdom

Written by R.L. Wilson | Jun 18, 2025 1:43:20 PM

The dictionary defines wisdom as the “ability to discern inner qualities and relationships,” (Merriam-Webster), “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise” (Oxford).

The Bible tells us that the source of true wisdom, godly wisdom, is God Himself. Further, it stresses, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10). Is that clear? Godly wisdom comes from knowing God. Godly wisdom becomes a lifelong journey of learning more and more about Him. As you become God-ward wise, you will gain the ability to make wise decisions about the things you face in this life.

Here are some verses about wisdom. Choose a few to memorize so you will be reminded of where to turn when you sense that you lack wisdom.

Proverbs 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 2:6 – For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 12:15 – The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.

Proverbs 16:16 – How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

Proverbs 19:20 – Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

Jeremiah 33:3 – Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

1 Corinthians 3:18 – Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.

Ephesians 5:15-17 – Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
